P&G - THE NAME

Everyone has a name. And for many in the AAPI community, they carry a deep history and significance. But acts of bias, mispronunciation, and misidentification can make Asian Americans feel outcasted in the US, now more than ever.

Small, non-belonging actions — like misidentification and even misunderstanding and mispronouncing someone's name — are "invisible enemies" that leave no marks. They equate to "you don't belong here," and can be damaging when they're repeated. They make people feel like lesser human beings and can lead to a sense of helplessness.

But there are a lot of ways to make Asian-Americans feel at home, starting with the simplest gestures. And nothing is simpler, or makes someone feel more seen and understood than getting their name right.

Created, directed, and produced by an all-AAPI team, the film, "The Name," follows Korean-American parents and their young daughter as she grapples with her identity the moment she leaves her family and experiences the world outside their home. As the story unfolds, we eventually discover, through everyday acts of kindness and self-strength, that even the smallest efforts — like learning someone's name — can help a person feel like they truly belong.

To help the masses to pronouce AAPI names correctly, we build a custom tool that allows everyone to add their phonetic pronunciation and get a custom graphic that you can share on social.
